Review: Mama Masala

“Situated at Queens Quay in Derry’s waterfront, with panoramic views over the Foyle and the peace bridge, Mama Masala offers a unique mix of an authentic Indian Tandoori Restaurant and an Italian Pizzeria!”

As the sun set on the Foyle and the running club took full advantage of the good weather, we were transported to the other side of the world with aromas of spices and a subtle hint of cultural music in the background.
Reaching the top of the stairs to the restaurant of Mama Masala we were greeted and seated by the window and our host brought a selection of menus including the drinks menu, early bird menu and the full menu.
Popadom’s were ordered as a starter along with Chicken Pakora. Both were served piping hot and with a wide selection of dips to choose from. Each dip tickled every taste bud with both spicy and sweet sauces!

In between courses we ordered Strawberry Daiquiri’s, which we could see were made fresh from the bar and served in large cocktail glasses for £4.95, assuring value for money.
Service was speedy and attentive to detail; our water jug was replenished without us asking, dishes were cleared almost as soon as we were finished and the next course was delivered promptly.
Chicken Korma from the student menu with a soft drink and the Indian Curry was ordered as the main courses served with Naan bread and chips.

Ripping the Naan bread apart released the aroma of freshly baked goods, the bread was both soft and crispy and accompanied the dishes perfectly.
Both mains were served in authentic Indian style curry pots ensuring steady temperature throughout our meal. The Indian curry was hot and spicy but not off-putting, and the chicken was succulent and tender. The pot was large enough for two to share and we will know for the next time we visit!
The chicken korma, being on the student deal menu, was slightly smaller but still could not be finished by one person. The korma as expected was slightly milder than the curry but the chef still managed to pack in tantalising flavours into the little Indian pot.

When we were finished and paying the bill we noticed a small £1 but none the less, powerful donation Mama Masala had added on to raise money for Foyle Down Syndrome Trust. We were more than happy to keep our donation on our bill and would pay this time and time again.

Student satisfaction: Extremely Satisfied             Value for money 100%
